Aug 22, 2008"Enjoyable reading" First-time author, Ashley Barnett does an outstanding job portraying a simple country girl’s adventure involving a prized violin. The story takes the reader from a farm in Tennessee to the country of Germany. It is an interesting, mysterious and easy read, being a great book for pre-teens. Mrs. Barnett has done a great job at writing a story that any age audience would enjoy. She is to be commended for a book that is hard to put down once you start reading The Violin's Secret.
Jun 1, 2008I would like to recommend a fun book for a preteen and up audience: The Violin’s Secret, by Ashley Desiree Barnett. It is a short (87-page) story of adventure and mystery. The tale unravels the eponymous secret of a young Tennessee farm girl’s violin. This is not (so far I as can tell) some sort of subtle statement of the author’s geopolitical worldview; this is a relaxing, pleasant, lighthearted story simply meant to be enjoyed. The plot is engaging, and includes a couple of surprising twists as the mystery travels from Tennessee to Europe and back. The most impressive aspect of the story is its characters: they are intelligent, likeable, people who behave in a morally respectable manner. The author is a Christian, and her characters are generally exemplary. These characters are kind, respectful, honest, prudent – and consequently – likeable people. They contrast sharply with the “heroes” populating much children’s fiction today who behave, foolishly and then lie, cheat and steal... More > to save the day. The Violin’s Secret is a delightful story that preteen readers should be able to enjoy, and while it is not a weighty Shakespearian tome, anyone older who appreciates an engaging plot and admirable characters will also like it. This book is well worth its $11.99 cost.< Less
