The issue of sickle cell disease is a global health phenomenon and the regions of the sub-Saharan Africa have seen much impact of this disease with Nigeria carrying the highest burden. Despite the significant progress made in the developed countries such as the UK and the US as a result of early screenings of newborn and antenatal programs, pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, intensive care and bone marrow transplant, which has reduced the rate of mortality and morbidity and have also positively impacted the quality of lives of carriers, it is sad to notethat the management in Africa and in Nigeria to be precise has been described as suboptimal with reasons identified.
