Sunny and happy remembrances of my childhood are associated with red dragonflies. In summer and early autumn a very large number appear in the country side, dancing around gracefully. When I left Korea in 1958 for France memories of flying red dragonflies followed me.
This book is about the tensions, surprises and sometimes happiness of a life lived far away from my cultural roots. There are three parts. The first part describes my childhood in Korea under Japanese rule, followed by the division of the country and a devastating conflict between the two divided lands. It continues with my life of student in France filled with euphoric discoveries of the new culture. The second part is a collection of snap shots of impressions or observations as I traveled in the course of my scientific career. In the third part I talk my minds on such subjects as religion or art from the view point of an Oriental living in the West.
