In thirty-six stories, Auten Webb explores the two lane highways and off-beaten paths of a rough and often brutal American landscape. The stories involve relationships between young and old, fathers and sons, and the lonely and the discounted. Told in terse language, frequently in direct dialogue, Webb allows the characters to express their fears, desires, wit, and sadness. Interstates, back roads, rivers, railroads and the small towns they visit become a breathing part of Webb’s authentic ensemble cast.

Have you ever been around a campfire and mesmerized by the bright red embers of a dying fire and suddenly jolted back to reality by sparks or the cracking of a green limb? These short stories by Auten Webb hooked me from the very beginning. After reading the first story I read the next and the next. Each story was a spark of realism about life and death, good and evil. My favorite character is Jesse "Meanness and L.O.V.E." A man who pulled himself up by his own bootstraps after the turn of the century, with a lifespan covering WWI and WWII and after. He could be the main character of a series of books. This is a good read. Enjoy!

Reading Webb's collection of short stories was like wrapping yourself in a warm blanket. His stories were intriguing and heartfelt and I found myself engrossed in every story and wanting to know more. Webb has truly signified his stature as a writer and story teller.

I thoroughly enjoyed this compilation. The stories were unpredictable and thought provoking. I couldn’t put the book down until all the characters and stories were resolved…or evolved into something I didn’t expect. It's a must read.

This is a great book. It's like watching your favorite movies back to back at a drive-in theater. There are so many intriguing characters and the author takes you on the scenic lost highways of America exposing the lives of everyday people. Highly recommended.
