This is a recommended read, and has a strong resonance with the themes of Margaret Atwood's "The Handsmaid Tale". The setting is Britain, in a not too distant future, where women are viewed as either breeding machines, sex slaves or servants. It is a bleak world, which thankfully has pockets of resistance to the tyranny of a paternalistic society that is drunk on power. Hebe follows the journey of a young woman who is active in the resistance movement, and who suffers multiple indignities and setbacks. However she overcomes huge personal and political challenges to emerge a stronger woman, capable of continued trust, activism and love.
