Oct 15, 2009"Carefully researched & well written" This is the ONLY serious biography of Herman Kahn available, but thankfully, it is excellent. It is an in-depth and detailed study, of a less than well known man, who changed the way the the world and policy-makers looked (and still look) at nuclear war. (see Amazon.com reviews of HK's books "On Thermonuclear War" and "Thinking About the Unthinkable") He offered and asked for objectivity about a subject that most people respond to with emotion, if not hysteria. HK later founded the world's first non-government affiliated "Think Tank" and turned his eyes toward the future. As one of the first 'futurists', instead of making predictions, he offered a range of 'relatively surprise free' to unlikely SCENARIOS starting in the late 1960s. (see Amazon.com reviews from 2000 of HK's book "The Coming Boom", reprinted in 1983!) He told the Japanese they would be one of the world's great economic super... More > powers before they realized it themselves, and predicted the ecomonic boom of the end of the 20th century while others were predicting doom and gloom, unsupportable population numbers and the ecological end of the world. In 1998, 15 years after his death in 1983, Forbes magazine commented on how he had 'gotten it right' for most major events of the last third of the 20th century. B. Bruce-Briggs chronicles the entire life of this brilliant man, who achieved the highest score ever on the army intelligence exam at the beginning of WWII. His book divides HK's life into 3 major parts: The Prodigy, The Strategist and The Seer. Mr. Briggs, who co-authored several books with Kahn and worked with him for many years at the Hudson Institute, spent roughly 15 years researching, writing and fighting with publishers before self-publishing the book in 2000. Sadly, it has never been picked up by a 'regular' publisher. A truly wonderful review of the book by Dan Seligman appeared in the April 2001 issue of Commentary magazine (accessible at the Hudson Institute website at www.hudson.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=publication_details&id=817). The book has been mentioned more recently in 'damning with faint praise' (a Hermanism) reviews of Sharon Ghamari-Tabrizi's ABSURD book "The World's of Herman Kahn". In a world becoming, once again, increasingly dangerous, a look back at the still-applicable and accurate work of Herman Kahn, and the re-issue of his early works on strategy and nuclear warfare, could make the world safer for all of us.< Less
