Great embarrassment has been experienced in preparing the following pages, from a sense of the impossibility of anticipating the wants of every body, and the difficulty of deciding what phrases will be most needed.* The amount of labor expended in the preparation of this work, if foreseen, would have discouraged the author at the outset; and even when half-completed, he would have relinquished it had it not been for the strong conviction that it would, if properly executed, prove a great public benefit. Special pains have been taken to bring the matter within such compass as to make the book not inconvenient for the pocket.
