This book has helped me to understand some things that I had not known before. I thought it would be a depressing book, that I would find page after page after page of depressing stories. True, what Barnes went through was quit depressing, but it was also an eye opener. It was also informative, sometimes humorous, and showed that there are people out there who are not just only into themselves. I really did enjoy this book. I also liked the is different. I think Ms. Barnes should be given many kudos after all she went through. In fact, my story is slightly similar but I would not have had the guts to tell the world like Ms. Barnes did. For that alone, I take my hat off to her.

This book was so empowering. It is beautifully written, especially the poems. The author went through so much. She remained positive and kept pursuring her dreams. Once it was realized that she was pretty, not ugly, her inner power was unleashed. Just as she said, "I rose from the ashes of life." This is a distinct possibility for all of womankind. It can happen to you.

Pretty Ugly opens the door to real life experiences and tells in detail about situations that exist but are often times never spoken of as honestly as in this book.I would recommend reading this book to all of our daughters and young women. The stories and information given I'm sure would serve many in a positive way.

I found this book to be a very straight forward and candid look of a young girl growing up in New Jersey (USA). I was able to empathize with her sense of loneliness and her desire to be loved. It is not just another book of a woman who overcomes challenges such as ADD, depression, homelessness, abuse, alcoholism, drugs, poverty, and living in a dysfunctional environment. It is a testimony to what can be done when one desires to move forward and does what is necessary to break through barriers and discover breakthroughs….it shows what is possible. I get that the author was able to climb above what many would have found daunting. I saw “growth” in the book when she ultimately became a mentor and motivational speaker at women’s shelters in Washington, DC - R. Jacob
