Much of what she writes is great, however she completely ruins the pro-child, positive message with her chapter on spanking (i.e. hitting). There are actually steps given on how to spank/hit "properly" (where did we as Christians get the idea that there is a "proper way" to hit our kids?). The scriptures to back this up are the standard ones usually given from Proverbs, but no mention is ever given of the actual Hebrew translation for rod (shebet), which is "to teach", or "guide"--it is the same word used in the 23rd Psalm actually (thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me...), and a shepherd would never beat his sheep, and are not children so much more precious? And even if one denies that the word rod has been translated to fit the cultural norms of the time, what about the fact that harsh punishments are under The Law, and we are now under Grace. Do we still take our rebellious children outside the camp and stone them, as was required by the... More > law? No! Could you ever see Jesus spanking/hitting a child? The children were making noise and the disciples tried to send them away, but Jesus said "Let them come to me!" Eph 6:4 says "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger by the way you treat them. Rather, bring them up with the discipline and instruction that comes from the Lord." (NLT), and Col 3:21 says "Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged." Children see God as they see their parents. It is possible to raise Godly, loving children without hitting them. Let's raise our kids with love and respect with positive parenting techniques, without the shame and humiliation that comes from punitive parenting. ("Should Christian Parents Spank Their Children" at goes into more detail on this, as does the book Loving On Purpose by Danny Silk; for some effective strategies, see and< Less
