This is a "review" of sorts from the author. This review is for those considering purchasing a copy of my book to help inform you if this is the type of book you need or want. This is a short book containing professional photography done for television and the press, primarily for commerical or publicity reasons, from a veteran professional photographer with half a century of experience. It teaches the basic principles of becomming a professional photographer by studying a selection of my professional photographs (but not all of them - I have thousands!), how they are done and comes with a lot of hints and tips to make your work outstanding, and either get you into your first professional job, help you keep your job, or get promoted by getting better at professional work. The book teaches for the most part through the study of a small selection of my own work as I have mentioned, with comments where things may not be so obvious, and includes shots of celebrities such as Mel... More > Gibson, Benny Hill, Sir Elton John, Sir Michael Parkinson, Gordon Elliott, on-set shots, on-location shots, publicity and crew shots and much more. I have photographed thousands of people from ordinary people making a living to personally requested private jobs for people where guests included a reigning monarch. I also did the first official nude spread in Australia. (Contrary to popular opinion, Britain is not as prudish as you might think; I had done many nude shots in Britain before coming to Australia, and was advised when emigrating to Australia not to take my nude works, since they would probably be confiscated!) Your job as a professional is part of the publicity and marketing machine. This is something you must understand, and is discussed at the beginning of the book. Whether you work in the press, for television, on movie sets or for the alternative news media on the World Wide Web, a great deal of your work is to get free advertising for your employer (or yourself, if you are a freelancer). The great shots you take will be circulated and will give a lot of value to your employer's media, and bring in the viewers, widen circulation and so on. It's possible your best work will be re-used, again and again, to attract and retain an audience for your employer or yourself in the case of self-employment. If you really want to become a professional photographer rather than a hobbyist photographer, this book will get you started. More books after Professional Photography: A Practical Guide will follow, with a focus on digital work. My email address is in the book, so you can get in touch with me if you would like to, perhaps to offer constructive criticism for a second edition, or point out any errors that I may have overlooked so I can put up an errata. I hope that if you are serious about professional commercial photography, which is where most of the work will be, you will consider my book. It's short, but that doesn't matter: the basics you need to start with are still there. Barry Buchanan Honorary Life Member, Australian Journalists Association P.S.
