There is a lot of originality in this short book. The poems retell highlights from the Robinson Crusoe story in a new way, and with wit and charm. Bart Wollfe writes accessible poetry, mostly in a free style that's easy on the reader, and with a feel for the natural rhythms and rhymes of spoken speech. Here's a sample from the moment Crusoe goes swimming: "Sighting a couple of coupling crustacea/ Kissing claws grappling/ Deep in the Davy dank below/ Crusoe wets his brow with a splash/ And crashes into song .... " We meet Friday, of course, and also Friday's terrifying brothers. Crusoe eventually is heartily relieved to be rescued, leaving his companion behind: " While Friday's voice filled the island/ With lamentations to an older god than Crusoe."
