There are over 100 poems here in accessible, free-verse style, with varying subject matter but generally looking at Life from the perspective of one life as it has been lived in both Africa and Europe. The writer has a feel for the rhythms of spoken language and a strong and fresh turn of phrase. For me, living in England, it is the poems with their roots in Africa that are especially interesting, but many could be located anywhere. Here, for example, are the opening lines of one that is representative of many and which I particularly appreciated; it's called A Brief Respite: "Cloud passes its hand across the sun in silence/ And I am comforted. Now the coolness is welcome/ For my burning thought. Smoke ascends lazily./ I sip the day, slowly slipping into this pool/ Of idleness. ... ... " I've now ordered the latest book by Bart Wolffe.
