This novel centers on three people, each caught in a their own tragic circumstance, whose paths intersect on a Lakota reservation in Pine Ridge, SD: an outsider - a psychiatrist from Charlotte, NC, a Lakota woman who straddles the fence between her beloved people and her knowledge informed by her Western education, and an influential Lakota leader facing his own crisis of faith. The sparkling detail, always relevant, helps carry the story, which is compelling enough on its own merit. It takes us into the world of the modern-day Lakota tribe, weaving the timelessness of the Lakota beliefs with the contemporary struggles of these three people. The conflict between the three is carefully rendered and draws the reader into the eventual resolution. This novel will appeal to those with even a passing interest in Native Americans, their history, and their contemporary struggles, as well as readers wanting a powerful story about how people come to view themselves and their evolving place in...
