Honest and quirky, this cleverly constructed piece of travel writing gives appropriate sincerity to delicate discoveries whilst reminding the reader that it is okay to find reasons to smile in even the most grim circumstances. The author's ability to depict his youthful vulnerability with mature understanding ensured I fell in love with him. Again.

The story of a stand-up comedian on a gap year. British-born Kiwi, Ben Stokes, drinks his way back to the Motherland (Scotland) and learns a thing or two along the way. Blindingly honest and laugh-out-loud funny, at times you think you are Ben Stokes. A rollicking good read with the funniest farewell to virginity story you could imagine. By the time you finish this book you will be impatient to read his next installment. Well done!

Flatline Theory is like a beautiful, gritty, well-needed slap across the face for any young person. You're taken on a journey of self indulgence, self destruction and ultimately self discovery. Stokes has a really interesting, intelligent voice as a narrator; an excellent cross between a crass teen-age boy and a man wise beyond his years, His wry sense of humor and self deprecating manner keeps it balanced and fresh. There's a devastating subtlety to this writing that totally draws you into both the story and the narrator. It's young, reckless, and utterly honest. Definitely worth a read.

This little Novel is a well written piece about a young student coming from New Zealand to Asia finding life, love and adventure. It is very personal, he wears his heart on his sleeve all the way coming over like a decent human being with tons of integrity. It is eloquent and intelligent but also gritty and edgy which equates well with the explanation of the flatline/ lifeline theory at the end of the book. Edgy living, scary stuff. Well done, really enjoyed it.
