“Toxic Romance” is a gritty noir-style comic set in New York City, which is struggling to rebuild itself in the wake of toxic war. The main character, Marcus, is an enigma—a stand-up comic who wants to bring hope to the city even as he stands on the cover a hulking, adversarial figure in a SWAT jacket. In high school, Marcus rescued and fell in love with a beautiful young girl named Faith—who he meets again ten years later on a subway platform. Despite being beaten by thugs and threatened to leave her alone, as she is part of the mysterious “kama-sin,” Marcus chooses to see her again anyway in his quest to find answers—a choice that explodes into violence. While Faith is a little one-dimensional as the beauty in need of rescue, Marcus is a brooding anti-hero with depth and complexity, and both characters captured my curiosity. The detailed panels of the comic complimented the text and called for a deeper look; the ones depicting the ruined city were both affecting and haunting. That... More > most of the comic is in black and white also heightens the noir feel, using the tradition of dark heroes to place Marcus squarely in the midst of those who struggle for good even in desperate times. While I think I would have been a little lost without having first read the back cover, the backstory there really allowed me to enjoy the comic and the characters the author/illustrator has created; “Toxic Romance” also ends without any true answers, leaving me curious about the next installment. I would recommend this comic to those who enjoy adult comics (language and violence make this one unsuitable for younger readers), and for those who enjoy gritty and stylized movies and stories such as “Sin City” all the way back to Humphrey Bogart gangster classics.< Less
