Delighted to get this review from Carol Cotter: Really enjoyed this book- in my opinion the incredible tale of Joseph Emidy is all the more fascinating because it is a true story. With vivid imagery the reader is drawn into the exotic and enrapturing world of 1790's Lisbon and Brazil, and the dignified struggle of a young boy, cruelly torn from his family and homeland, as he seeks the path to his own freedom. As his story unfolds we see him not only experience three continenets, rare enough in the days before widespread international travel, but also overcome prejudice, boundaries and slavery. Joseph's love of music and outstanding talent are intertwined in his adventures, as his beloved violin becomes the one thing that can save him. This book is a refreshing and welcome change, carrying an uplifting message to children and adults alike.
