Not all love stories have a happy ending. Unfortunately, that was the case for Betty and George, however, so that George’s death would not be in vain, Betty has become the voice for not only her beloved husband but for all patients in need of advocacy. Healthcare has become a complex, difficult to navigate system leaving some lost and confused- others harmed and neglected. Every patient needs a voice. Betty Tonsing has a story that all medical professions must hear and heed. And then this will be a love story that ends well. Betty seized upon the idea to write a book about her husband's journey through the U.S. medical establishment that started with a routine knee operation and ultimately, and shockingly, spiraled to his death. It is more, however, than just one patient/one caregiver's story about medical mistakes, patient advocacy and trying to survive the medical "system". Betty heavily researched medical statistics, incidents, and experiences, and this factual and statistical information is interwoven in her story. Betty even conducted her own survey and multiple interviews, gathering information about the needs and shortcomings of the provision of medical care in this country, and relates the near and not-so-near misses these needs and shortcomings caused. I found it compelling, unsettling, and thought provoking.

I am drawn to Dr.Tonsing's endeavor because for the last seven years I have worked constantly to see my elderly mother and father through many difficult life stages.Last year I lost my 92 year old dad after medical, financial, bureaucratic and family complications that I would never have imagined are a part of life. My 90 year old mother continues now in an Alzheimer's facility.I'm afraid after many years, she no longer recognizes me.Betty Tonsing has employed research methods with which she is well acquainted.I know of her writing and the book demonstrates Betty's skill at being balanced and compelling.Surely the book is timely. While her work points out challenges for us all,one has to respect Betty's motivation for creating the book, which is to be of help to everyone who is engaged in the delivery of health and family care. I knew Betty's husband well.I respected him as a friend,a sincere and talented professional and as a human being. No one should have to be subjected to the... More > things which affected his health, care, and life in the last years. I believe all of us need the insights that Dr.Tonsing's book provides.I hope it is read widely because our entire system of healthcare needs improvement at a time when challenges of demographics, technology, and funding, are more serious with every month that passes.
