A path of mindfulness through a collection of forty watercolor paintings with Haiku poems by Balakhovsky. "This artistic path is a mindfulness journey for me. It gives me unexpected gifts and wonderful surprises." Unknowingly, I took my first step in this transformational journey when I took an afternoon beginners watercolor painting class. I was so stressed out from work that I wanted to try something different. Since I had never painted before, I thought I would try this class. From the very first day, I was fascinated by how the different colors moved and blended on the damp paper. I was so focused on what was happening that I forgot everything else. I was in the present moment. This was a very powerful mindfulness, a focused form of meditation for me. This was my beginning toward a richer, more meaningful, more positive outlook on my life.

Nov 3, 2010Beverly Balakhovsky's "Present Moment: A Path of Mindfulness. A Collection of Original Watercolors and Haiku Poems" is a beautiful book that would make a wonderful gift for just about anyone. I found this book when I met the author at one of my wife's storytelling conferences. Present Moment consists of 40 watercolor paintings, each with its own haiku. The paintings are reproduced with an extremely fine lithographic screen that is not visible to my unaided eye. Landscapes, seascapes, skyscapes, flowers, a few ghostly human figures, all in bold bright colors. The haiku help the viewer remain with the present moment of each painting. I have serious reservations about writing syllabic verse in English (which is not a simply syllabic language like Japanese or Spanish or Cherokee), but I can hear the 5-7-5 syllable count in Bev's verse better than I have ever before been able to in English. The poems also observe the other conventions of the haiku - seasonal reference and the... More > skilled use of punctuation as a substitute for the "zero verbs" (kireji) of haiku grammar. The reverse of the title page notes "book designed with Cheryl Hilliard Breunig", who according to her Web site (cherylbdesigns dot com/) is a Wisconsin watercolorist and giclée artist. The book does not state this, but Bev gave me permission to say in this review that the book was published through Lulu.com. The result shows what can be accomplished with this new route to publication. The Amazon page for Present Moment will show you a number of pictures from the book, at quite good resolution. I'd suggest that subsequent printings of Present Moment include more information about how the book was made, as an inspiration to the reader about what can be done with the various media used to make it. I'd recommend Present Moment to lovers of watercolor painting, haiku, and online publication, and the book would make an ideal gift for just about anyone.< Less
