I picked up this book and decided to read a little bit to see if it piqued my interest. I'm not sure what page I turned to, but it happened to be a very provocative part of the book. I literally COULD NOT put it down. I sat on the edge of my bed and read page after page until I realized one of my kids was calling me. Darn! I would have to finish it later. Well, let me tell you this woman that never has time to read, finished this book! Stealing a few minutes here and there, and staying up after the cherubs were in bed, I managed to finish it in 5 days! That's how good it was! I thoroughly enjoyed being invited into the private thoughts, feelings and stories of a young girl on her journey into womanhood and found myself relating to her on so many levels. Bev, I don't know how you found the courage to put so many personal experiences down on paper, but I am so glad you did. Thank you for sharing your life in print. I can't wait to read the "rest of the story"!

An open and brutally honest story that was courageously written. Behind Her Smile reflects both the good and bad as it reveals the life of a young girl that, in some ways, didn’t “fit in” to a culture that had passed her by in so many ways. But she caught up! And the struggles she faced while doing so changed a shy little girl from the hills of West Virginia into a bold and dynamic personality. In her writing, Ms. Cuevas exposes herself to criticism from those who would cast stones and praise from those who recognize her talents, who appreciate her honesty and feel a sense of pride as they witness the life of the Christian woman she has become. I understand she is in the process of completing her life’s story in a second book. I look forward to reading it.

Beverly is a talented writer who makes you feel like you are having a conversation with a close friend. She takes you through her life including her hopes, dreams, aspirations, heartbreaks and triumphs in an engaging and personal style. Her story is insightful and endearing - and as other reviewers have noted, blush-worthy at times. As a guy, I find that Beverly has related eyebrow-raising descriptions of love, romance and sex from the female perspective. Probably more insight than I expected! Brings to mind the old "what do women want" and, well, some of the answers are right here. But I digress. In the earlier chapters, she describes teenage angst and the turmoil of finding one's way through boys and high school. As she begins her career as a flight attendant - stewardess, the title at the time - you sense her consummate professionalism and commitment to her craft, her airline, her associates and her passengers. Beverly dispels the tired, old "coffee, tea or me"... More > myth of these highly-trained crew members and reveals the challenges of caring for the traveling public day after day, flight after flight. Bev opens up about her personal struggles in her marriage and the toll that constant traveling takes on relationships. She describes her mistakes in judgement, and the consequences and attendant heartbreak with a very real mix of regret and denial. You shake your head at some of her behaviors and choices but your heart aches as she struggles with depression and loss. Your eyes may fill with tears at the poem a soldier wrote to a stewardess on his way to the battlefields of Vietnam. Mine did. And, as an international traveler myself, I laughed along with her at some of the antics of both crew and passengers. Oh, the things that happen on airplanes! Then you cheer as she finds new love, as she triumphs over naysayers and adversity, and as she grows into the Beverly we know today - confident, cheerful, and happy. In the best of literary traditions, she leaves us with a cliffhanger - I can't wait to read volume 2!< Less

I've known Bev for some time, and found her book to be quite entertaining; to say the very least! I admire the Light-Years leap she made from a small town girl, to the Rush, Pressure, and Excitement of being a stewardess for a major airline, to be amazing! Bev's life was changed dramatically when she put on that uniform; and it kept on spinning with the exciting, talented, and important people she met along the way...and some of them were real Winners! If you like a "tell-all" book, Bev's book is a must read!!

A fun read about a great girl who made her wish come true. Even as a guy I enjoyed many of the stories about growing up in West Virginia and Ohio. Elvis Presley and Wendell Ladner - WOW! My only regret is not hearing more about some of the characters and funny situationS Bev must have dealt with as a flight attendant. As an author, she has a fine sense of humor. Can't they make a movie or sitcom out of this?! AND, when is the sequel coming out? Roger Simonds
