I had become a quite unashamed admirer of Cronin’s Bloomington ‘Town and Gown’ series so I ordered my copy of B-town Blues as soon as it charmed its way from the presses. It arrived faster than I expected. I had intended to flick briefly through it but sat down to read. When the telephone interrupted me nearly two hours of my life had been enriched. What had delighted me was a smorgasbord of the bittersweet musings of the recently retired – close enough to be informed and accurate, sufficiently remote to be uninhibited. Here an iconoclastic master pathologist conducts an autopsy on the living remains of his world, its excesses, vainglorious vices, pomposity and occasional virtues paraded like vanquished foes in a triumphal march. Once again Cronin’s weapon of choice an apparently effortless elegance of prose and a wit variously jagged and gentle, simultaneously decorating and protecting itself by an armour of cultivated intelligence. I had better stop here lest my review becomes... More > longer than the book, its relative brevity being my only criticism.< Less
