Southside Retrace: Strategies to Retain, Redefine, and Reconnect Public Housing in South Omaha
Usually printed in 3 - 5 business days
The Omaha Housing Authority (OHA) is at a critical crossroad: the infrastructure of the Southside Terrace public housing community has exceeded its functional lifespan. The cost to maintain the 75-year-old structures is no longer viable for OHA, which intends to demolish the site and rebuild. OHA has applied for a HUD Choice Neighborhood Planning Grant and envisions rebuilding the community to better serve its 1,300 residents, roughly half of whom are Sudanese or Somali refugees. This book presents four planning and design proposals generated through intensive research and mapping, which provide redevelopment approaches ranging from immediate low-impact design to visionary planning strategies. Kansas State University landscape architecture students completed the work during the summer of 2016 in an 8-week community planning and design studio led by professors Belanger and Hahn. The effort was supported with funding from Kansas State University’s Technical Assistance to Brownfields.
