Author Bob Porter was born in 1941 and lived all his life at the family wheat and sheep farm Riverside, in the mid west of Western Australia. Fifty consecutive years of farming the fickle Australian climate, his knowledge of characters from the bush and the antics of the native animals and farm dogs, have given him inspiration to put some stories to verse. Although fiction, many stories are hatched from real life events.

Sep 11, 2011Billy's Aussie Bush Ballads is a 24-carat gold presentation of the experiences of an Australian wheat and sheep farmer. In rhyme it reflects the joys and highlights, disappointments and despairs, hiccoughs, fun times, self-searching moments, challenges and the ultimately supremely satisfying life of the man on the land. This book follows in the furrows ploughed by a number of bush balladists including the famed Banjo Paterson and Henry Lawson, who are close to the heart of every Australian - whether they live in polished cities or rambling country towns, in isolated homes reached over corrugated gravel roads or in the carapaces of the grey nomads. Perhaps what lifts Bob Porter above many of his fellow bush literati is that, without doubt, he is a man who is at one with his land - in it and of it. And that delicious dry wit which distinguishes 'fair dinkum' Aussies puts a humorous edge to every word he writes. Bob Porter digs deep to touch the very well-spring that fires, sustains and... More > propels Australian farmers through floods, drought, bushfires and times of unbounded plenty. He remembers the hard times of his forebears who pioneered the land, taking up virgin bush and carving out a sustainable future for their descendents. He rejoices in the days when, with the help of good weather and high wool and grain prices, life because easier. He maps the journey, joins the dots and fills in the spaces, illuminating the lot with his humility, deep love of family and appreciation of their way of life. At all times he is appreciative and protective of his environment and this care for the land shines through his poetry. Sparkling along the way are the characters he meets - those who work for him, visitors who drop in to enjoy the Riverside hospitality, street-smart con men who, foolishly, think they can outwit the country bumpkins, schoolteachers, neighbours, experts in the field of machinery repair, crop management, animal husbandry and conservation and salesmen - from all walks of life. Together they provide a rich field for the bush balladist to mine. He writes about a world of quandong trees, coolibahs, windmills, sheepdogs, shearing sheds and rouseabouts, hops at the local hall, charcoal-making and school-yard bullies. And it is all full of wonder and food for thought. Bob Porter has made a valuable contribution to Australia's literary treasure - and he is to be commended for a publication that will revive memories and bring chuckles to many, not only those who have close ties to the land.< Less
