What Zuber has done with Belm is nothing short of extraordinary. He has created a new art form: part science-fiction novel, part personal philosophy, part comedy of manners, part utopian vision. "Belm" presents a surprisingly rich view of a future complete with unique modes of transportation, sustainable ecology, and an advanced social construct where conflict does not arise through politics or dramatic event so much as through one's evolution of self-acceptance. What happens for the reader is a blessing of gentle, evocative prose and a consistently interesting story as far removed from pot-boiling thrillers and over-plotted romances as the beauty of a leaf is from a clump of mud. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who wants something worth thinking about, mulling over, and savoring. Over the weeks since I first read it, the story of Belm and his extended family has stayed with me like a beautiful dream that is vividly remembered.
