Yu Darvish is one of the most talented pitchers in the world. Currently he is dominating Japanese batters. But stats alone do not tell you what kind of pitcher Darvish is, or how he reacts in given situations. This report is aimed at painting a clearer picture at what kind of pitcher Darvish is through plotting his pitches. The material in this report is based on pitch-plotting data, which is compiled using a special tool developed that projects a 3D strike zone on a computer screen. For this report, three games (315 pitches) were logged. The three games were chosen at random, with no preference given to great or poor performances. Categories for the pitch data were split into batter (left or right-handed), count, result, velocity and location. One circle indicates one pitch on the graphs, with the view being from the pitcher’s mound. The author is a Major League Baseball scout who has scouted Japanese baseball since 1991.
