Lawn Tennis as shown by 19th Century Photography

This book is a photographic record of early lawn tennis. Tennis in the 19th Century was mostly played by the upper social classes, although some homeowners of moderate income did build private courts. Their courts often were sloped, cow-pasture bumpy, and included hazards such as boulders and trees. Ordinary people mostly wore their formal street clothes to play the game. The photographs in this book show a far different look to the game than that of today. The book looks into the faces of these long dead people and enters the sunny landscapes of their distant years.

"Game, set and match" Thank you for presenting such an awesome collection of tennis photographs, Mr. Rowles. I enjoyed every page of it. You supposed correctly, as a reader of yours, I am an avid tennis fan. I love this spectacular sport for the variation of the game, for the involved strategy and the necessary technical aptitudes. It is amazing that despite the immense development, the basic of the game is still the same as in the 19th century. The photos of female tennis players from the 19th century amazed me in particular. What an enthusiasm, a willpower and determination they possessed to practice a sport in their woolen skirts, long underwear and corsets! How they could run with their hats, scarves and gloves! The sport is the ultimate nobility. You cannot vanquish somebody, if you do not vanquish yourself on the first place. You have to overcome the lack of oxygen, the cramps of your muscle and your self-doubt. There is nobody to help you in fighting this interior... More > fight with yourself alone, by your own willpower. You have to continue forward to winning despite the obstacle on the road. That is the philosophy pushing us forward in our life expressing what we are as human beings. This book is homage not only to tennis, but also to sport as a whole.
