I love this author! This is the second book by Brenda Sorrels and it left me wanting more. There is heartbreak in the beginning when a great family tragedy sets a thirteen year old boy, Jake, off on his own. The story takes place during the depression era and Jake meets, Franz, another boy his age. They end up riding the rails together, travelling the country and taking the reader with them through all the ups and downs and on every adventure. I fell in love with these characters and I can't wait for her next book!

The Way Back 'Round is a fast-paced, beautifully written piece of historical fiction. Given the author's ability to create characters with depth, as well as formulate a plot that is both sensitive and warm while also being full of action and intrigue, it's hard to imagine that this is only her 2nd novel. The Way Back 'Round will appeal to anyone looking to put a face on the boys who rode the rails during the Depression and ended up enlisting in the army in WWII. On a deeper level, however, it is a thought provoking narrative about the choices we make in childhood that can sometimes haunt us well into adulthood. As an avid reader, I don't recommend new authors lightly. This one, however, seems to be a shooting star.
