This, the final book of the Marching to Byzantium Trilogy, is an excellent piece of fast-moving fiction. Although still well grounded in historical accuracy, the novel really brings alive the purely fictional character of Mario Orsini, the young physician and alchemist, who outfoxes his political superiors to find unexpected fortune and much deserved love. The plot climaxes in a Doomsday-like scenario where many of the characters reap what they have sowed. The exactness of the depiction of the battle for Constantinople surpasses that of even the best Ottoman and Greek scholars. For lovers of historical fiction, this is a must-read!
