Instead, she approaches the world outside the titular tower with joy, courage, and a willingness to improvise in the face of dragons, bee swarms, tree monsters, thunderstorms, and true love.

The Tower is a gentle, charming and quirky 'silent' book, where the fairy-talesque story is rendered not in words, but with pictures. It is the only of its type that I have read, or should I say watched? Tha action involves a Rapunzel figure who, refreshingly, takes rescue into her own hands and gets into a series of sticky situations once outside the titular tower. The most charming of these vignettes involves a do-good frozen knight, who is variously thawed out, melted and refrozen in his attempts to help the girl. Miyamoto's illustrations, while colourless, are beautifully expressive and range from cutesie to epic in nature. Bennetts' storytelling is open to whimsy and there is a wonderful 'what-next?' vibe to the progress of the central characters. The all-too-neat ending (which might be expected considering Bennetts' background as a performer of comedy improvisation?)will appeal to loose-end haters.
