History reports that Billy the Kid was killed in 1881. However, for more than a century the rumor has persisted, that this was a mistake, that another man was mistakenly shot in the dark. In 1950, a mysterious man known as Brushy Bill Roberts, confessed that he was the real Billy the Kid and petitioned the governor of New Mexico for a pardon for crimes committed under that name. Despite testimony from many of the outlaws old friends, he was discredited. He died 28 days later in Hico, Texas. This book is a research documentary of William Henry "Brushy Bill" Roberts claim. It documents Roberts' story (in his own words), and investigates it (word for word). This is a story, which you may or may not believe, but it is a story you will never forget. It is a story about second chances and spiritual redemption. This is the story of Brushy Bill Roberts, the man who laid claim to the greatest legend in the history of the old west - the legend of Billy the Kid.

This is a truly excellent book and deserves the top rating because it is unbiased and thorough. I am writing a book about the Kid myself, and would very much like to get in touch with the author. I am an ethnohistorian at Univ of So. Calif., live in NM.
