In one year of working as a freelance writer, from June 2007 to June 2008, Brian D'Ambrosio had the opportunity to meet and spend time with but a few of the many eclectic personalities that make Western Montana so unique.
The stories collected here say what only stories about people can, and in so doing, they open our eyes. These snippets of life tear the curtain to reveal who and what we Western Montanans really are. Feature profiles include photographer Richard Paup, totem pole carver George Gulli, former NHL tough guy Jim Agnew, ex-NFL-er Guy Bingham, and furniture builder Andy Maisel.

Dec 17, 2012got a copy of this book, remember a lot of these subjects. Remember Brian D'Ambrosio when he worked at Montana journal. Remember lots of interesting articles from him. Plenty of great subjects from years past. I love the Rudy Autio piece and the one about furniture builder and cigar box guitarist. Good, old-time feel good book from D'Ambrosio. mostly people from Missoula.

May 10, 2011Many interesting folks and places here. Easy to read, well-written but not dense or too heavy to digest, a few pages for each subject, and enjoyable subjects and topics. Such as John Walker guitars: "In a western Montana wilderness paradise full of rushing rivers, plentiful wildlife, and timbered forests, some may be more than a bit surprised to find a craftsman making stringed musical instruments. However, eight miles east of Alberton, off a dusty, remote country road, there is a luthier named John Walker doing just that – one string and fret board at a time." Guitar makes and totem pole carvers and artists abound.
