Half a Step Ahead: Learning My Way Around a Motor Scooter

"NOT ONE STEP AHEAD, BUT A HALF—ENOUGH TO MAKE PEOPLE RETHINK WHAT A SCOOTER COULD DO FOR THEM AND THEY WITH IT." That was the philosophy behind the creation of one of Yamaha's most popular two-wheeled vehicles, the CV80 "Beluga"—known as the "Riva" when it was released in the United States in 1983 and by various other nicknames around the world until the model was discontinued in 1987. It also sums up the author's experiences over several years of owning and tinkering with one and then another CV80, as well as a few other vintage motor scooters. "HALF A STEP AHEAD" is a personal and practical guide that's accessible enough to encourage a novice, yet sufficiently technical to offer insights of value to even the most practised scooter mechanic. Though things seldom go according to the author's plan, what's most important (as he discovers) is learning to enjoy the ride.

Great book on the real owning of a scooter. The excitement and frustration are captured, as well as details and approaches. I don't even own a scooter, but now I kind of want to.

An excellent, entertaining read that stradles the line well between instructional and experiential. Humorous teachings from someone passionate enough to put in countless obvious hours researching historical perspective, but modest enough to admit that he made a few mistakes along the way.

An inspiring and informative read for any scooter owner or home mechanic. Street provides an interesting, educational and humorous tale about the perils of restoring an aging scooter. CV80 owners, home mechanics and vintage scooter enthusiasts will all find this book charming, well researched and packed with information. Dan - MotorscooterGuide.net

What a ride as I joined the author on his journey into the world of scooters! I felt his frustration in sourcing scooter parts and chuckled at his challenge when working with a manual in one hand and a tool in the other. I shared in his glee of the first ride on the restored machine and was thankful that I was an armchair traveller during the inevitable (?) breakdown in rush hour traffic. B.J. Street tells his story with humour, yet this book is filled with practical tips and advice for both the novice and experienced scooter enthusiast. I know that I am certainly more enlightened!
