This is a real-life story of one man's struggle with 3 major and at least 12-15 minor strokes. From it's beginings through the stroke's aftermath, the novel is written in fast and simplistic terms. A truthful accounting of what led or possibly led to 3 massive brain accidents and their resulting consequences. Hard, factual, and sincere in every way, the author hopes to help others who have been there - or are heading there - to change their outlook and turn their lives around before it happens to them. If you have had a stroke or know someone who has, this is a must read.

"Terrific read" I found this story to be well written and informative. Mr Lange is adept at bringing his "brain issues" to life in a quite engaging manner using the interview technique. All in all an excellent, fast paced read save for the technicalities of some of his military experiences. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has had a stroke, or knows someone who has.

"Defeating the Monster" Wonderful and well-written story about a life lived with courage and hope, and about a hard-won battle. In many ways it is everyone's story. I definitely found myself within the covers of The Monster and Me. Lange uses an interesting format for telling his story. He personifies his brain issues and sets about interviewing the created entity he calls "The Monster." Instead of whining, which could be forgiven for anyone wrestling with such a problem, Lange writes objectively and shares his healing viewpoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it. It's worth the price of the book just to read the descriptions of the chemical exposures that occurred to our soldiers during the Gulf War. The truth, to my knowledge, has not been this well documented by the media.
