This is the story of how, at a time when photography was looked down upon as a soulless, mechanical tool, the Glasgow Boy artist Sir John Lavery covertly employed it as an artistic aid to the painting which brought him fame and fortune: The State Visit of Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, to the Glasgow Exhibition, 1888-1890. It is also part of a bigger story which tells of the artistic resurgence that accompanied Glasgow’s rise to industrial and commercial strength in the last two decades of the nineteenth century.
