This book provides a foundation for the study of the transport of mass, heat, and momentum by a fluid. The applications are many. It is fair to say fluids are integral to life as we know it. Whether we are discussing the transport of oxygen and nutrients throughout the body or transport at the molecular and cellular level, fluids are part of the game. The oceans and atmospheres are fluids and whether we are interested in predicting tomorrow’s weather or trying to understand global climate change, the equations developed in this book provide the basic foundation of those computer models. The conversion of energy as we know it today from the combustion of fossil fuel is dependent on flow, heat and mass transfer. Developing possible renewable sources of energy from wind, tidal, wave, or solar require a solid understanding of transport phenomena. We are so accustomed to living in fluids, that it is easy to forget or underestimate their importance.
