‘Torn in the New SA’ is a project of love, which will strike a chord within the soul of every person who has ever lived in, loved and left South Africa … and those who have chosen to stay. This book made me smile, made me laugh, and also made me cry. But mostly, this book made me think. As I read it, I found myself exploring ideas in my head, my reasons for living where I am today, and discovering thoughts and feelings about my childhood (in SA), my life (where it is now), and my future (where I want to be). No matter how you view South Africa, whether you’ve left already, are in the process of leaving, or are determinedlly soldiering on, despite every adversity, this book will be food for thought. You might find yourself sobbing over similar experiences, nodding in agreement, or muttering angrily. Whatever your reaction, this book will grip your heart and leave you thinking. By sharing her experiences, Bronwyn McIntosh has given us a voice, putting into words what we were finding so... More > hard to say, answering the niggling voice of doubt that has persisted within so many of us, and giving us a reason to believe. By sharing her thoughts and the thoughts of so many others worldwide, for one brief moment as we each read this book, we are no longer ‘torn’ and ‘alien’, but united in our grief, our mourning, our joyous memories, our optimism for the future, wherever that may be.< Less
