"New Albion: Common Sense II" Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in a country where boundaries are based on watersheds instead of nonsensical lines for county divisions? Have you thought about sustainable utilization of natural resources and the richness of Northern California? Well, Bruce Herring, Nevada county local and former SYRCL board member, educator, river guide and wearer of numerous other hats, has not only thought about it, but he has written about these ideas. In his recently published book “New Albion: Common Sense II”, Bruce utilizes his background as a teacher of history to weave a fictionalized accounting of how the northern part of California could have become a city state with pressures put upon it by the United States to reenter the fold. Gabriella Hunter Vallejo, as the candidate for presidency, presents a series of position papers to contrast the ills of the US government and the solutions that New Albion has instituted. As this... More > writer read the engaging account, she was constantly feeling, yes that is right! Many of the ideas are ones we espouse ourselves and wonder why as a nation haven’t adopted them. Of course the idea of being locally governed by watershed councils will be new and strange to some, logical and desired by others, and certainly thought provoking to all. Any book that takes you to Englebright Dam for a discussion about restoring salmon can only encourage the hearts of Yuba River supporters. Bruce has a winning book on his hands and readers will not be disappointed with the story plot, the interspersal of well crafted Civil War events and current dilemmas or the stunning account of the coastal Miwoks and their encounter with Drake’s landing on the shores of what we currently call Drakes Beach at Point Reyes National Seashore. The back book cover entices the reader, “Are you thinking there’s something about our system that just isn’t right? Are you thinking there must be a better way to select out political leaders? Are you wondering how to get from here to there?” Submitted by Geri Stout Grass Valley, California< Less
