Ursula Walton shuddered and whispered, "I hear knitting needles clicking and imagine tumbrels rolling...on their way to the guillotine." This, after she and her husband began to realize that the tiny "island paradise" to which they had fled for the summer might be something else altogether: Formerly welcoming neighbors now seem involved in something sinister; and, as events unfold, the spread of revealed treachery grows steadily. Finally, near story's end, just when it seems that terror's worst has been reached, the unthinkable almost leaps from the pages. But underlying good exists throughout, perhaps best exemplified by unqualified love shining between Patrick, the "defective," and a frisky, wild sea otter.

Mar 21, 2010The title of this work should immediately pique the reader’s curiosity as to its application. Who or what is defective? As the author leads the reader through the maze of mystery, murder, and mayhem , the reader will perceive that the lust for power is strongly reflected, yet its corruptive manifestation is sometimes obscurred. Concommitantly, this defective element is applicable to seemingly well-intentioned characters in the work, who initially plan to improve the functioning of our government, but become over-zealous in their actions. However, lurking secretly behind these people are wealthy, powerful, evil entities who actually promote and control their actions. Ironically, this defect is not inherent in the character of the young man described as defective by some of those over-zealous planners. The primary setting for the story is an out-of-the-way island named after an exotic feline, located off the shore of an unnamed mainland. The island was owned by an eccentric,... More > unscrupulous muti-billionaire who presumably lost his life in a plane crash. There are four cottages on the island, plus a fortress-like structure atop a promontory which is accessible primarily by a gondola/cable affair. The nephew of the deceased billionaire has rented the cottages to four married couples ( one with a grandson, the supposed “defective” character;) each with impressive professional and academic backgrounds. Most of them have similar political views, and have come to this secluded island to secretly plan the overthrow of the United States government. One of the couples disappears, and the cottage they had inhabited is then rented to another couple: a retired airline pilot and his writer spouse, who are initially completely unaware of the other group’s insidious plans. This couple become the protagonists in the story and, with the catalytic aid of the grandson, succeed in foiling the terrorist threat to the nation. However, the denoument of the story foreshadows potential reoccurrences of the the threats. For those readers who insist on romance in a story, the author has included a strong love element involving not only humans but also a delightful sea creature. S. A. Saverino< Less
