A childlike story for grownups. A grown up kind of story for children. A short story about a little boy who discovers his father that he can't remember. A short story about a little boy who's imagination is powerful. Or who's heart is open to believing what other's can't.

Oct 21, 2019C. Faherty Brown has another great story! The Sentinel is a charming tale that hits home. Buddy gets the chance to see what so many of us want-to see our parents through another’s eyes. This short story is warm and loving and really touches the heart. ❤️
Jun 10, 2019What a wonderful story about family and sacrifice through the eyes of a child. I will be reading this to children. And I will enjoy it as an adult each time.
Feb 1, 2019I read the book, assuming as I went, imagery, substitution, metaphors or quid pro quos. It was a difficult read. Nothing. Just a child's story from an innocent and imaginative child's perspective. So I re-read it, breezing through (past) my earlier assumptions and had fun all the way. I'm still unsure who the central figure is but it's not material. There is a little drama, some humor and some life lessons relearned.Cute book. My thought; read it, put it on the coffeee table. Read it again and if you have a chance, read it to a child.
Jan 10, 2019The Sentinel is a beautiful story full of warmth that speaks of things we all hold dear -- family, belonging, understanding and faith. A quick and easy read packed full of emotion. Great for children and adults. Beautiful work by C. Faherty Brown.
Dec 12, 2018This is a perfect and lovely short read, especially at the holidays, as it evokes such warmth about family, nature and the power of belief. C Faherty Brown weaves a magical simple tale that leaves the reader with a profound sense of wonder and belief in a power greater than our own. In this case it comes in the form of a magical tree....a sentinel, but it opens one up to belief in protection and wonder and family and so many other important core values. It really is a treasured piece that I will hand on to my own grandchildren.
Dec 1, 2018I don’t think there’s a universally ‘right way’ to read, but my best and favorite way is with a fresh pot of tea. When I saw last night that THE C. Faherty Brown had published another piece, I knew my plan for the next morning was a fresh pot of tea, and a good read. This author’s work is usually accompanied by humbly expressive drawings, but this piece is made only of words and memory, of ideas and emotion; drawings would be redundant in this story because her words have found the perfect balance of how much to tell, and how much to leave to the reader’s imagination. C. Faherty Brown has developed such a distinct style of writing that invites you into her world, but also connects you with your own inner dialogue—it’s an interesting feeling to be simultaneously there and here, but she guides you through the entire way with bits of good-natured humor. She has a knack for creating pieces that are magically whimsical and also deeply thought-provoking, and The Sentinel does not disappoint... More > that trend. This story is ageless and for all ages; it will make you laugh, it will make you choke with tears, and it will make you reflect on your own beliefs, experiences, and life. As always when I get to one of her last pages, I am left satisfied, amused, thoughtful, and curious — how can I see the world more like she does — am I taking the time to appreciate the life I have —w hen will she finish the next one?! I’m making another pot of tea, and I’m reading it again. And probably again again.< Less
Dec 1, 2018I'm always transported to a different world when I read C. Faherty Brown's work. This book not only highlights her ability to do this, but it also shows another dimension to it. She is a master at creating mood. I love the innocence and wonder in this story. There is a quote by Anton Chekhov that says, "Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass." C. Faherty Brown does this and she does it well.
Nov 30, 2018A captivating tale, told beautifully. I felt as if it were me, as a child in my backyard.
Nov 30, 2018This is a different kind of book for C Faherty Brown. Her earlier books are a beautiful combination of illustrations with a short message. Here her words help create the illustrations in the readers mind. A wonderful tale of a young boys adventure in his own backyard.
