Railroad Builders: The Dunavant Family of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee

eBook (PDF), 100 Pages
Price: Free
By 1856, the Dunavants had begun building Southern railroads and they would eventually be among the South's prominent railroad contractors. They migrated from Southside VA to Western NC and Memphis, TN, adding to those regions new railroads, hotels, golf clubs, dams and tunnels. For 73 years, from 1856 to 1929, the Dunavants' large-scale construction projects contributed substantially to the development of Southside VA, Western NC (Morganton, Charlotte, Statesville, Asheville and Blowing Rock), and the South. In TN, the Dunavants were instrumental in developing Memphis as a railroad hub, and their descendants would build the world's largest privately owned cotton company. (This two-volume work received both a local/state history book award and a family history book award from the NC Society of Historians in 2015.)
