This article introduces the Johnston - Graham family of Charlotte, NC. William Johnston (1817-1896) was President of the "Charlotte & SC Railroad" and of the "Charlotte, Columbia and Augusta Railroad". In 1862, Johnston ran against Zebulon Vance for the governorship of North Carolina; Vance won. During the Civil War, Johnston served as Commissary General of NC, directing the state’s railroads to move troops and supplies. Johnston helped to organize Charlotte’s Commercial National Bank, which through mergers would evolve into today’s Bank of America. Julia Johnston Andrews, a daughter of William Johnston and Anne Eliza Graham (1827-1881), would marry NC railroad baron Alexander Boyd Andrews of Raleigh. Johnston served as Mayor of Charlotte for two terms: 1875-1878 and 1885-1887.
