An historic school, the Rosenwald (Canal) School, still stands in the Bridgewater community of western Burke County, NC. It represents a family of pioneer educators that served Burke for more than 25 years. It also represents Burke's other early African-American schools, including four other Rosenwald schools, that have perished. The new discovery of an extant Rosenwald school gives Burke Countians an opportunity to do what many communities have already done: document, or even preserve, a structure representing the educational achievements of early African-American citizens.
