There are some books that you really want to like, because they are clearly labours of love, but then you find that quality do not quite match with intentions. Sesselego's A Traveller's Guide to Mars Vol. I, sadly, is such a book. The description says: "The guide is the most complete handbook ever published on the John Carter’s saga by E. R. Burroughs." Actually, several books and web sites contain much more information, even considering the hitherto unpublished volume two. That would be a minor problem if the contents were only correct. But the book mixes facts taken directly (sometimes quoted verbatim) from the books with pure speculation, and it does not anywhere hint what is speculation. There are also some annoying factual errors, such as Llana of Gathol being referred to as John Carter's nephew! This reflects either poor research or sloppy proofreading. And speaking of proofreading, a good proofreader would have been a blessing for this volume, since there are a good... More > number of spelling errors and other mistakes, including errors in the Barsoomian words. To top it all off, the whole thing is printed with a perfectly terrible typeface that is very hard to read. So, is there nothing good about this book? Sure there is! Livi's art, while not of professional quality, is organic and interesting, especially the Martians. They do look quite a bit Elven, Tolkien-style, but I do not mind. It is also very nice to have pictures of Barsoomian flora, something which is not usually depicted by other artists. In spite of my criticism, the book works as an introduction to the world of Barsoom. Just do not rely on it as your only source of facts.< Less
