Environmentalists warn us of the dangers of the commodification of nature – of using up finite resources to make products that inevitably end up being trashed. The Freedom Formula explains how we are also commodifiying ourselves – trading off our quality time for things we’re forever having to be coaxed and cajoled into buying. And in the process many of us end up trashing ourselves. It’s an easy read, so I reckon the couple of hours it took me to follow through the book’s well reasoned theme have been time well spent. For some people it may prove the best investment of their lives. I may already be sympathetic to the Freedom Formula’s central arguments, but for anyone coming new to these – such as those whose lives are being crushed by debt – the book’s handy formula will provide a rare opportunity for them: to pause: to stop: to assess their priorities. And maybe even regain some of the peace of mind, happiness and control over their lives that they’ve unwittingly surrendered.
