This book shows just how good the ordinary person in the street can be, given the right motivation. The motivation in this case is the storm that all but destroys the function room of St Stephen's Parish Church. PC Frank Foster does a sponsered sing, while Reg Warner, the refuse collector, organises a charity football match. He realises that he might have bitten off more than he can chew, when he discovers that the opposition are a group of women, gathered together by Paula, Reg's wife. His is further dismayed to find that the 'referee' is none other than Helen, the wife of Joe Pringle, the reporter for the local paper, who also happens to be one of his bosses. Last, but by no means least, there's Jack Wild, who attempts to prove that he is more than capable of resuming his former job on Reg's team. He does this by entering a twenty mile sponsered walk, in spit of losing half a limb. The Climax to the walk brings this entertaining book to a poingnant and satisfying finish.
