For the first time in the history of documenta, interpretation is at the centre of its curatorial concept. Carmen Moersch gives an account of the rationale of the programme and the nature of its interpretive tools. Gallery education is seen as a ‘critical friend’ to both the institution and the art, the aim of which is to develop a ‘constructive meta-discourse’.
