Formerly and briefly titled 'Views From A Hill In Tobago' this is a light-hearted and completely true account of a memorable family holiday on the tiny Caribbean island of Tobago.
It all started when I was at home waiting for a new cooker to be delivered, so rather than twiddle my thumbs or watch some appalling daytime TV show I sat down at the computer and, well this is the result.

I bought this book after striking up a forum friendship with the author - her sense of humour on her posts appealed to me greatly and she was kind enough to buy one of my books and review it. Thusly I thought I would return the compliment - however, I would definitely have bought this book anyway if I had spotted it in a bookshop. It's really quite brilliant. It must be a tough task to sell the world a holiday experience you have had but Carol pulls it off with aplomb. The writing is fluffy and light, very descriptive with a fierce intelligence boiling away underneath...and you've got to love a woman who insists on carrying her own luggage. The book is packed with humour, travel tips, a vivid picture of Tobago and even ways of dealing with that tricky and unwanted blister (or matching pair). My only criticism is that I wanted more of it and pictures would have set the seal on one of the nicest books I've ever opened. Get that revised edition out Ms Townsend! I recommend this book to... More > anybody and everybody - buy it and enjoy and finally...why the hell hasn't this been published? Come on you lazy publishers, get yer fingers out! Well done CPT xx< Less
I found this book absolutely delightful! It's the tale of an English family's vacation on the Caribbean island of Tobago--a world very different from their everyday life at home!--and all the funny adventures and quirky situations they find themselves in. Recommended to anyone looking for light, fun reading!
"A Little Gem" Caribbean Capers and Tropical Tantrums is a treasure and a delight to read, told with warmth and humor reminiscent of Gerald Durrell's tales of his childhood on Corfu. The descriptions of Tobago, its people and customs take you to a place where the technology of today has barely intruded and Mother Nature still holds sway in most areas and in others is fighting back. An added bonus is that not only does this book immerse you in a gloriously tropical world, you also get to know Carol and her family and they are as much a part of the tale as Tobago itself. I read it in one sitting and chuckled most of the way through. How can you not love a book that puts you on intimate terms with the Mother of all Blisters? There are also little pearls of wisdom concerning nature, our fellow men and our lifestyles scattered throughout. Caribbean Capers and Tropical Tantrums is a little gem of a book.
"A chuckle in the Caribbean" I loved this book, a light but fun read. There were a few places that I laughed out loud, and many that made me smile. I would thoroughly recommend this book, not just for people who like travelogues, but anyone who enjoys a well-written, humourous story.
"A translation of Gisela Grell's review" Whoever has been to Tobago and also in Castara, should definitely read this book. Anyone who has not been to Tobago should definitely read this book as well, because then he will want to go to Tobago. If he does not want to go to Tobago after reading this book, he probably wouldn't feel comfortable there. I have recognized many things and have heartily laughed about the phrasing and anecdotes. I hope, Carol Townsend will write more books. Even if she would not write about Tobago, I would probably buy that book, too. With thanks to Val Long for providing the translation.
