Then and Now, Catherine Saint-Cyr Anderson's recent book of poems, is a treasure trove of simple words laced with profound meanings. From poems about the death of her greatly-loved husband ("The Last Good Day" and "March"), to beautiful observations of nature ("The Snow Has Been Falling for a Day and a Half," "Moon Dreams" and "Two O'clock in the Morning") to poems of compassion and regret ("Survival" and "Toxic Silence") and poems of searching for and finding new love ("What If" and "Valentine"), these poems surprise the reader with their simply stated truths. One example: "Arlington," Countless rows of white headstones.../ solemn reminders of those felled.../ by an enemy they neither knew nor hated. These poems can startle the reader as in "Pagan Rituals" when the poet declares: ... being a pagan has its own succor and with amusement as in "The Spider and the... More > Giant," told in the alternating voices of the title characters. Much richness and delight inhabit the pages of Then and Now as the reader follows the trail of a well-lived life. --Review by Willow Partington, Cambridge, New York (This review was added to by Jeannine Anderson.)< Less
