Celeste Ramos is a poet from New York who lived all over America and later came to live in various places in Europe. Her quite candid, seemingly autobiographical poetry explores the intersection of identity and place. Has she been running or has she been searching? Has she changed along the road? Has she even left herself behind some place - and if so, who is she now? There's an easy intimacy to the way she writes. She's not obscure and she's not cold. She talks to the reader like a friend. The poems are really accessible and tangible - almost chewy little stories, with specificity and humour. Down-to-Earth and relatable imagery and references. But there's also proper gaps of ambiguity - spaces for the reader to interpret, and to imagine their own feelings and life-stories into the words. These are all relatable feelings and experiences. Longer and shorter, conversational and staccato, the poems are varied in form which makes the book fun to read. They are organised in sets named,... More > pleasingly, after cloud formations. And Ramos talks in the introduction about a life of watching clouds from a window. Reading the book feels to me like watching a life from a cloud. Her view is wide. She's a person with a lot of stories, a lot of things to describe, all the way round the world, all the way back to home and childhood. Relationships are a theme throughout. The relationships of a nomad, coming-to, leaving-behind, temporary, provisional, stretched and tested by need to travel on, up the road. Relationships made strange by distance, made bitter through absence, made precious by the shortness of time before departure. Where you come from is always with you. But is where-you-come-from, who you are? There's a lot in that question and in this book Ramos really gets at it. Some of the poems are freewheeling and fun - others are raw and nakedly emotional. They're varied like clouds. Recommended.< Less
