This introduces two early mayors of Cedar Key, FL. Edward J. Lutterloh was born in Chatham County, NC, to Eliza Comerford Lutterloh and Brigadier General Charles Lutterloh. As a young man, Edward was a commission merchant in Fayetteville, NC. In Wilmington, NC, he was an agent of the Lutterloh Line owned by his brother, Thomas S. Lutterloh. (Before the Civil War, the Lutterloh Line was one of the larger steamboat fleets traveling the Cape Fear River between Fayetteville and Wilmington.) After 1859, Edward relocated south, eventually settling in Florida. He was a captain in the militia there and, in 1871, he built a residence in Cedar Key which today functions as a local museum. For over 25 years, he served Cedar Key as an attorney; he also served as mayor. John Brooks Lutterloh was Edward’s nephew and a son of Dr. Frederic H. Lutterloh and Angelette Brooks Lutterloh of Chatham County, NC, and Gatesville, TX. In Cedar Key, John served as a merchant and as mayor.
