Chad Stauber's "The Jesus Files" is a short, fast-paced novel that relies on elements of modern Biblical scholarship and the search for the historical Jesus to create its storyline and intrigue. In particular, the novel draws on "The Secret Gospel of Mark", a non-canonical gospel that, if it actually existed, was rejected by the early church as unworthy to be part of the Biblical canon. Several non-canonical texts (the gospel of Thomas, the gospel of Mary, the gospel of Judas, etc) were all seen as heretical and unreliable. But one does well to remember that modern Biblical studies indicate that we do not have any original copy of any gospel and we do not know who actually wrote the four official gospels that did get included in the New Testament. Further, each official gospel paints a different portrait of Jesus and, clearly, each gospel was written to a community of faithful believers to make an impression upon them. Gospel texts were not written to detail the... More > acts and wonders of Jesus for the future church for, indeed, no such thing as 'church' existed when the gospels were written. In the first century, those who would become the ancestors of the future church were mostly just Jewish believers enamoured with the message and life of their fellow Jew, Jesus...the one they saw as the Messiah...God's annointed one. Thus, non-canonical gospels like "The Secret Gospel of Mark" have to be viewed in the context of the audience for which they were written. That they were rejected by early Church Fathers does not mean that they do not have important information to contribute to the understanding of the historical Jesus. It is for this reason that an exciting novel based on Biblical intrigue, such as "The Jesus Files", provides an access point to look at and consider the content of these alternate sources of text. Perhaps Jesus never married as the canonical gospels imply, or maybe he did. Or, perhaps, he didn't marry because he was more attracted to men (as The Secret Gospel of Mark seems to hint at). But isn't that scandalous! Isn't that ludicrous! Isn't that blasphemous! Perhaps…but it is for these exact reasons that the ideas should be discussed and explored, not feared. Congratulations to Chad Stauber for providing a compelling fictional narrative and allowing us to engage and explore the ideas!< Less
